If you have noticed an increase in stray hairs on your pillow, your comb, or throughout your house, you may be wondering why this is occurring and for how long.
Many people panic when they notice that they are losing hair, but it is important to recognize that approximately 100-150 hairs are shed each day by the body.
It is important to note, however, that if the number of bald patches increases, your scalp becomes more visible, or your hairline recedes, you may be experiencing a type of alopecia. Two-thirds of men suffer male pattern baldness by the time they reach the age of 50, and many notice signs as early as their twenties. Hair thinning is not uncommon, but most men and women who experience it do not wish to accept the gradual loss of their once luscious locks. Our society places a high value on hair because it is associated with beauty and youth. A thick head of hair is regarded as a sign of virile masculinity by men, while a thick head of hair is considered a sign of feminine allure by women.

When you notice that your hair is falling more often, you may be curious about the cause. Many myths exist regarding the causes of hair loss, such as the notion that brushing hair frequently or wearing a hat will result in baldness. According to these claims, the hair that falls out when you pull on, rub, or wash your hair has already fallen out regardless of whether you wear a hat or brush your hair frequently. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen hormone, regulates hair growth and sex drive instead. A high level of androgen in the hair follicles shortens the growth phase, resulting in thinner hairs replacing naturally shed hairs.
To help you better understand hair growth and shedding, we have outlined the stages below.
Anagen, which is also referred to as the growth phase, generally lasts between two and seven years. Hair will grow thicker and longer as this phase continues.
A Catagen stage, or transitional stage, typically lasts between one and two weeks. During this period, the dermal papilla shrinks, and the hair bulb/root detaches.
Telogen is a resting phase that lasts for two to three months. At any given time, 10-15% of your hair is in this phase. During this phase, the hair remains in the follicle but does not show any signs of growth.
Exogen is the new phase of hair growth. During this phase, an individual typically sheds 100 to 150 hairs per day, as the old hair falls out to make room for new hair to grow from deep within the follicle.
